Newbury, NH – (June 27, 2007) – Tim and Diane Mueller, operators of Mount Sunapee Resort, are pleased to announce the seven recipients of the Mount Sunapee Council Scholarship Awards for the 2007/2008 school year. These scholarships, totaling $5,000 each over a four year period, have been awarded from the Mount Sunapee Community Challenge Fund to students of our three regional high schools: Sunapee, Newport and Kearsarge.
An additional four scholarships of $1,000 each have been awarded by Mount Sunapee Resort to employee students and employee dependents allowing them to further their academic endeavors.
Funding for the Mount Sunapee Community Challenge Fund is from the annual Snow Ball held at Mount Sunapee Resort every February. The Fund is used for the Mount Sunapee Council Scholarships and to support student education, environmental education and the arts in the Lake Sunapee region. Since 2001, forty-one students have received over $200,000 in scholarships from the Mount Sunapee Community Challenge Fund.
“Tim and I believe that education is central to our local prosperity and to an individual’s ability to achieve their career goals and lead a fulfilling life,” commented Diane Mueller. “These scholarship programs support our belief of fostering education and enhancing community spirit.”
Mount Sunapee Council Scholarships have been awarded to the following seven high school seniors for 2007/2008:
Mount Sunapee Council Scholarships
Hanna Koby of Wilmot, NH is a graduate of Kearsarge Regional High School and will be attending Smith College where her focus will be on History. She plans to travel around the world before becoming a history teacher. Hanna was a varsity lacrosse player and varsity swimmer finishing fourth in the State in the 100-yard freestyle. She is also an excellent student with a GPA of 3.7 ranking her in the top 15% of her class.
Edward “Teddy” Lague of Sunapee, NH is a graduate of Sunapee Middle High School and will be attending Keene State College where he will major in Business Administration with a focus on computer informational technologies. Teddy was a true “Ski Meister” participating in alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and ski jumping. He was also webmaster for the high school website, managed the girl’s volleyball team, in the Thespian Society and participated in the Harvard Mock Trial.
Jennifer Luppold of Lempster, NH is a graduate of Newport Middle High School and will be attending the University of New Hampshire. While her major is still undecided, Jennifer hopes to pursue a career in the health services field working in a hospital setting. During high school she completed Health Occupation programs at Sugar River Regional Technical Center. She is a black belt at karate and was senior class Vice President.
Justin Martin of Springfield, NH is a graduate of Newport Middle High School and will be attending Emmanuel College where he will major in Business Administration. He is setting his sights high with his goal to work for a Fortune 500 company. A varsity football and basketball player, he received the Sportsmanship Award in 2005. He participated in Future Business Leaders of America, Model United Nations and the Head Start Mentor program. Justin was a member of the National Honor Society.
Molly Rice of Sunapee, NH is a graduate of Sunapee Middle High School and will be attending Norwich University where she will pursue a career in Nursing. Molly’s goal after college is to work at Dartmouth Hitchcock or a local hospital. Molly ranked first in her class at Sunapee Middle High School with a 3.99 GPA. She was a varsity volleyball and basketball player, served as the Student Council President, was active in the National Honor Society and volunteered for the Relay for Life and for Lions Club functions.
Alicia Schmidt of Bradford, NH is a graduate of Kearsarge Regional High School and will be attending University of New Haven where she will major in Forensic Chemistry. Her goal is to use her skills to work for a law enforcement organization. At Kearsarge Alicia participated in the High School Band and was active in the National Honor Society. She was active in the community in various 4-H clubs and is a Sunday school teacher at United Church in Warner. She ranked in the top 10% of her class with a 3.8 GPA.
Alexandra Stevenson of New London, NH is a graduate of Kearsarge Regional High School and will be attending Bates College where she plans on majoring in Biology or Physics. Her goal is to become a doctor. Alexandra was captain of the cross-country and cross-country skiing teams and was on varsity basketball and track & field. Alexandra participated in the Model United Nations and tutored students in the elementary, middle and high schools in math and science. She was a straight “A” student at Kearsarge.
Mount Sunapee Employee Dependent Student Scholarships
Mary Fiset of Wilmot, NH will be a senior at the University of New Hampshire where she will earn a degree in Nursing from the college of Health and Human Services. Mary attended Kearsarge Regional High School where she was very active in sports, extracurricular activities and community service. Upon graduation Mary plans to work at a children’s hospital in Florida. Her mother Terry Fiset works at the Learning Center Desk during the winter at Mount Sunapee.
Mount Sunapee Resort Employee Student Scholarships
Kristen Nichols of Contoocook, NH is a graduate of Hopkinton High School and will be attending Syracuse University where she plans on pursuing a pre-med curriculum. She wants to continue on to medical school after graduation. At Hopkinton High School Kristen was on varsity cross country and track, was a tutor in German and was a member of the National Honor Society. She worked at Mount Sunapee during the 06-07 season as a Learning Center instructor in the children’s program.
Rachel Burger of Amherst, NH is a graduate of Souhegan High School and will be attending Agnes Scott College where she will major in Philosophy and Pre-law. She would like to become a lawyer and a professor. Rachel has a tremendous love for music. She was member of the Jazz Band, Marching Band and Concert Band all four years at Souhegan. She was also in the choir. Rachel has worked for five seasons as a Learning Center instructor at Mount Sunapee.
Erik Fifield of Newbury, NH is currently attending New Hampshire Community Technical College of Nashua studying Automotive Technology. Erik attended Kearsarge Regional High School. Erik has always had a passion for cars and hopes to open his own garage. He played baseball at Kearsarge for three years and was active in community programs through the Boy Scouts. Erik worked at Mount Sunapee during the 2006-2007 season as a parking lot attendant.
